Prenuptial Agreements, Assisted Reproductive Technology Laws, on Tap at ABA Family Law Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 10, 2012 – Hundreds of the country’s most influential family law attorneys are set to convene in South Beach, Fla., to discuss leading family law issues, including assisted reproductive technology laws, same-sex marriage, and the intersection of criminal and family law. The American Bar Association Section of Family Law’s 2012 Spring CLE Conference will take place April 18 – 21 with headquarters at the Eden Roc Hotel. Panelists will also discuss hot topics in family law concerning diversity issues, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and adoption basics.

Conference programming starts Thursday, April 19. Program highlights include:

“Criminal Law in an Un-Civil Case: A Lawyer’s Guide to Handling the Intersection of Criminal and Family Law” – From domestic violence to the filing of false financial affidavits, a panel of expert practitioners will teach attendees what to do when confronted with accusations of criminal conduct.
April 19, 9 – 11 a.m., Ocean Tower II, Salon A

“The Effect of the Changing Color and Culture of Our Nation on the Practice of Family Law” – Panelists will discuss the effects of the ethnic, racial, cultural and religious diversities in family law, and how family court judges and practitioners may respond to those changes.
April 19, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Ocean Tower I, Salon C

“If You Love Me, Put It In Writing!” – This program will provide a comprehensive overview of pre- and post-nuptial agreements, including how to conduct the client interview, ethical issues that may arise, various ways to protect separate property without an agreement, and estate and divorce planning. Panelists include marriage and divorce law practitioners from across the country.
April 20, 9 – 11 a.m., Ocean Tower II, Salon A

“The Genetic Surplus Store: What Do You (or Should You) Know About Embryo Donation?” – There are hundreds of thousands of stored embryos in the U.S. that will go unused by the intended parents who created them. This session will explore what information is relevant to the storage, transfer and ultimate use of these stored embryos once the originating parents have decided not to use them.
April 21, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Fisher
