Sotheby's to exhibit Islamic and Turkish art at Katara Gallery in Qatar

/EINPresswire.com/ Monday 26th March 2012 - In collaboration with Katara, the Cultural Village, Sotheby's is delighted to announce that it will hold a travelling exhibition of Islamic Art, Ottoman Art and Orientalist Paintings on Friday and Saturday 30th and 31st March, 2012 at the Katara Art Gallery in Doha.

The exhibition will feature important artworks from across the Islamic and Ottoman worlds, spanning centuries of fine craftsmanship and traditions unique to Muslim culture; as well as paintings of the Middle East and Turkey by nineteenth-century European, Russian, and American artists. The works on show are a special preview of the forthcoming sales at Sotheby's London within Turkish and Islamic Week: Classical to Contemporary, which runs from 24th-26th April, 2012 and which will include the following sales: The Orientalist Sale; An Eye for Opulence - Art of the Ottoman Empire; Arts of the Islamic World; and Contemporary Art/Turkish.

Commenting on the occasion, Benedict Carter, Deputy Director and Specialist of Sotheby's Middle East Department, said: "Sotheby's Turkish and Islamic Week sales will present some fantastic works of art to come from the Muslim world and we are pleased to exhibit a selection of highlights at Katara in Doha before they are offered for sale in London. It is particularly exciting to be able to offer several rediscoveries, hitherto hidden in private collections, as well as other fine works of impeccable artistry, historical importance and distinguished provenance. Furthermore, we are looking forward to presenting an educational series of gallery lecture tours".

President of Katara, Abdulrahman Al-Khulaifi said: "We are proud to collaborate for the second time with Sotheby's to bring Qatar and the Arab region the best of art. This is indeed another testimony of our commitment to bringing cultures together from all corners of the world. What makes this partnership of extreme importance is that not only does it put forward great artworks at Katara but it will also deliver substantial and unique object based educational programs to all art lovers in Qatar."

"The Katara Visual Arts Education Department is thrilled to work in partnership with Sotheby's Auction House in delivering a very exciting educational program, which we are hoping, will engage the Qatari public as much as it has engaged and excited both our teams; attendance will be free of charge for all artists, collectors and art lovers" Al-Khulaifi concluded.

Claude Piening, Senior Director and Head of Sotheby's Orientalist Paintings Department, said: "Highlights from the Orientalist Sale include a rare masterpiece, The Scholar, by the Turkish painter Osman Hamdy Bey; an important early view of Constantinople and the Bosphorus by the Russian painter Ivan Aivazovsky; as well as landscapes and figural works by Edward Lear, Rudolf Ernst, and Frederick Arthur Bridgman. Today, just as when they were painting over a century ago, these artists and their work represent a bridge between East and West, and by showing them in the Gulf and here at Katara, we very much hope to contribute to this valuable cultural dialogue. We look forward to welcoming you to view these museum-quality works in the Katara Galleries".
