AJC Questions French Prime Minister’s Remarks on Ritual Slaughters
March 6, 2012 – Paris – AJC is deeply concerned about French Prime Minister François Fillon’s remarks on ritual slaughters.“Religions should question the survival of some traditions that don’t have much to do with the actual state of science, technology and health issues,” Fillon said in an interview on Europe 1 radio.
Simone Rodan-Benzaquen, director of AJC France, said that “Prime Minister Fillon’s remarks are troubling at any time, but especially now in the period leading to presidential elections.” Fillon’s comments follow a recent debate about the labeling of products from ritual slaughters.
“As head of the government, the personal remarks of Mr Fillon have great political significance. Religious rituals belong to the private sphere and have no place in the public debate,” said Rodan-Benzaquen. “We have to remain vigilant about a debate that could stigmatize minorities and give voice to extremists.”
