Bakersfield, CA — Dozens of people at a Bakersfield retirement community have been quarantined after becoming infected with the norovirus. Forty people at the Carriage House Estates have been quarantined for the last week-and-a-half, reported KERO Bakersfield.

The norovirus symptoms began appearing after Feb. 1., which consisted of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea that can last 24 to 48 hours.

The norovirus can spread quickly in close quarters, like long-term care facilities. The Carriage House Estates since have undergone extensive cleaning, and visitors are asked to wear masks and gloves for their own safety.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the norovirus is a highly contagious illness, which also goes by other names like viral gastroenteritis, stomach flu, and food poisoning.

A person can become infected with the norovirus from eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated, touching contaminated surfaces and having direct contact with an infected person, the CDC reports.

Carriage House Estates plans to lift the quarantine after the last two people have been cleared of symptoms.
