San Quentin Prison Riot Seriously Injures 3 Inmates

San Francisco, CA — A riot at the San Quentin State Prison has seriously injured at least four inmates Thursday, February 9, 2012, in the prison’s exercise yard, reported the Sacramento Bee.
The morning riot consisted of between 150 and 200 prisoners, in which dozens were slashed and stabbed by fellow inmates who had homemade weapons.
Prison guards had to use chemicals like pepper spray, along with projectiles and live ammunition to stop the riot.
Correctional officers did fire about three rounds from a semi-automatic rifle as warning shots, but the bullets reportedly did not hit or injure anyone.
The four seriously injured inmates were taken to area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while other injured inmates were treated at the prison.
No San Quentin staff members or guards were injured in the riot.
Investigations into the prison riot are underway.
