Hays Identifies the Changing Face of Japan's Workforce

Jan 23, 2012 (PRN): Ninety five per cent of companies plan to hire new staff in 2012, and almost one half (47 per cent) of these job vacancies will be filled by mid-career changers, according to a survey by recruiting experts Hays.

For one third (33 per cent) of those who make a mid-career change, their motivation is career advancement. Other factors driving people to make a mid-career change include securing a higher salary (29 per cent), the opportunity to specialise in a new field (22 per cent) and work/life balance improvements (22 per cent).

This increased willingness from both employees to make a mid-career change and employers to hire experienced candidates is changing the face of Japan's recruitment market, says Christine Wright, Managing Director of Hays in Japan.

"This is a fundamental shift in the way Japanese companies recruit," she said. "By hiring a mid-career changer, a business adds valuable experience to their team and benefits from a new employee who can hit the ground running and positively impact the bottom line from day one.

"Employers are quickly embracing the business benefits of recruiting experienced candidates. As our survey shows, almost one half of all vacancies in Japan in 2012 will be filled by candidates with previous experience. This shows how rapidly Japanese businesses are adapting to the changing market and how willing people now are to make a mid-career move."

Other findings from the survey include:

- 85 per cent of companies surveyed have involuntarily lost experienced staff to another company in the past year;

- 95 per cent of companies surveyed have employed a mid-career changer in the past year;

- 95 per cent of companies plan to hire staff in 2012;

- When recruiting in 2012, companies say 53 per cent of hires will be new graduates and 47 per cent will be mid-career changers;

- 92 per cent of companies surveyed said the main benefit of employing a mid-career changer is that their experience means they can contribute immediately. 26 per cent said they bring fresh blood to the group for new and better team dynamics and 25 per cent said they can complete tasks new graduates cannot;

- Almost one half (48 per cent) of mid-career changers were attracted to their new organisation by the responsibilities and duties of the role;

- For 21 per cent it was their 'fit' with the company's vision, culture and values that attracted them to a new role.

The survey was conducted in November 2011 of 200 people who had changed jobs mid-career within the past 12 months and 200 people who have hired a mid-career changer within the past 12 months, such as hiring managers, HR managers, HR specialist or HR coordinators.
