AJC Urges New Jersey Authorities to Apprehend Anti-Semitic Vandals

January 11, 2012 – New York – AJC urged New Jersey law enforcement to move expeditiously to apprehend those responsible for the attack on a Bergen County synagogue. The county prosecutor’s office is investigating the attack as an attempted murder and bias-related arson.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt in this outrageous attempt to inflict serious damage to the synagogue and harm to the rabbi’s family,” said John Rosen, director of AJC’s New Jersey Region.

Molotov cocktails were thrown at Congregation Beth El, causing a fire where the rabbi and his family live, and were sleeping.

The latest incident follows a series of hateful incidents in New Jersey, including the daubing on a Hackensack synagogue last month that read “Jews Did 9/11” and “14/88,” shorthand for a white supremacist slogan, “the fourteen words,” and “Heil Hitler.” H is the eighth letter of the alphabet. A synagogue in Maywood was similarly desecrated.

“Since these crimes occurred in multiple jurisdictions, we encourage the State authorities to use all appropriate resources to fully investigate them,” said Rosen.
