Stream Advisory Revised for Hill Creek and 142 Mile Creek in Lyon County, Located Southeast of Allen
Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has revised a stream advisory for Hill Creek and 142 Mile Creek Southeast of the town of Allen in Lyon County, Kansas.
The stream advisory is a result of a raw sewage release from the city of Allen’s wastewater treatment plant due to extreme flooding. The city of Allen is working to address the source problem.
The advisory has been issued because potential elevated bacteria and contaminants may be present in Hill Creek and 142 Mile Creek. If you live or have activities near these waterways, do not enter the water or allow children or pets to enter the water.
Kansas Department of Health and Environment in coordination with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have rescinded the advisory for Melvern Lake because of the distance from the lake to the city of Allen’s wastewater treatment plant and prevailing high flow conditions into the lake dispersing and diluting any impact from the release.
Kansas Department of Health and Environment will rescind the advisory once plant operations are repaired and subsequent bacteria testing on the streams indicates primary (swimming) contact has been deemed safe.
