Bachmann Seeks Camp Ashraf to Stay Open in Letter to President

On Dec. 10, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) wrote President Obama prior to his meeting in Washington with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. She asked the President to urge the Iraqi Prime Minister not to close Camp Ashraf on Dec. 31 out of her concern for its current residents who oppose Iran.

“Located in Iraq, Camp Ashraf is the home to 3,400 members of the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), an entity that opposes the current regime in Iran and promotes its replacement with a democratic system of government,” Bachmann wrote in the letter. “This opposition to the status quo in Iran places the residents of Camp Ashraf in constant danger. With growing Iranian influence in Iraq, Mr. Maliki has made it clear that he has no interest in protecting these residents.”
