Supporting our Small Businesses, Protecting our Economy

As a member of Congress, I receive hundreds of letters everyday from constituents in Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District and beyond. Usually reading these letters from my fellow Americans is something I greatly enjoy, but recently, I have received a number of heartbreaking letters from small business owners. In them, the writers beg me to do my best to improve our economic outlook in order to save small businesses across America.

One letter from Stillwater, Minn. stated, “As a small business owner, trying to survive, I can’t take any more! Employees will be let go!”

Another letter, from Forest Lake, Minn. read, “As a struggling small business owner this [economic climate] disgusts me. We have laid off all of our employees, and are trying to catch up on all of the taxes (payroll, property, unemployment)…This political corruption must end.”

I agree. We simply cannot afford to lose any more of our nation’s small businesses and something must be done.

After all, the small business community is vital to the American economy. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses employ half of all private sector employees. They also generated 64 percent of the new jobs in America over the past 15 years. These privately owned companies also pay a full 44 percent of the total U.S. private payroll. As a small business owner myself, it is unimaginable to me that the current administration would create policies placing a tremendous financial burden upon the owners of our nation’s small businesses, yet they have.

Due to the current instability of our economy and the slow introduction of the job-killing policies of Obamacare, several owners of businesses across America are having a very tough time keeping their livelihoods alive. From increased taxes, to mandatory health coverage and compliance with countless federal regulations, small business owners simply cannot afford to run a business.

Yet, there can be good news. Congress can do their part to turn this country’s economic outlook around and save our private businesses from closing their doors. Congress can start by repealing Obamacare. Forcing the majority of our nation’s employers to provide health insurance for their employees or pay expensive fines is detrimental to hiring and turning a profit. Second, Congress should remove uncertainty by reducing the current regulatory burdens upon small businesses and lowering business tax rates to 25 percent. And third, Congress must pass a practical and cost-cutting budget in order to get our nation’s fiscal house in order.

But Congress is not the only entity with the power to help our small businesses. “We the people” support our locally owned businesses every time we shop at the small businesses in our communities. For instance, one great way to make an impact during this holiday season is to join Small Business Saturday this Saturday, November 26. This nationwide initiative simply asks you to invest in the nation’s job creators by purchasing your Christmas gifts at small businesses this Saturday. I support this initiative and hope you will do the same!

I am so thankful for our nation’s small business owners because without them, our nation would have no hope of an economic recovery. To all of the Americans concerned about this important issue, please know that as both a member of Congress and a small business owner, I will do everything in my power to protect this crucial aspect of our nation’s economy.
