AJC Expresses Solidarity with Brooklyn Jewish Community after anti-Semitic Violence

November 14, 2011 – New York – AJC has condemned the violent anti-Semitic attacks that struck a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn on Friday.

“Fortunately no one was injured, but the depth of hatred demonstrated by these arson attacks is deeply disturbing, and demands renewed vigilance for Jewish security,” said Michael Schmidt, director of AJC’s New York Region.

The attacks came a day after Jewish communities around the world commemorated Kristallnacht, when synagogues and other Jewish properties across Nazi Germany and Austria were attacked on November 9-10, 1938.

The New York Police Department is investigating the Brooklyn incident as a possible hate crime. Several parked cars were alighted and destroyed by the fire.  The initials “KKK,” as well as swastikas and anti-Semitic slurs were scrawled on cars and nearby benches.

Schmidt, who reached out to the local Jewish community, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office and local legislators, expressed hope that “widespread public outrage over the anti-Semitic violence would help police apprehend the perpetrators of this despicable hate crime.”
