AFP Urges Vote on Strong Balanced Budget Amendment

Dear U.S. House Republicans,

On behalf of more than 1.8 million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I urge you to insist that the U.S. House of Representatives consider a strong balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. A balanced budget amendment only serves its intended purpose of protecting the U.S. economy if it addresses the true cause of our fiscal woes: runaway government spending.

The conservative community is united in its belief that a balanced budget amendment that does not constrain government spending to a historically reasonable percentage of GDP and limit the judiciary’s ability to raise taxes to enforce the amendment could do more harm than good. Thankfully, both the Senate and House currently have versions of a balanced budget amendment introduced that include these important provisions. In fact, all 47 Senate Republicans have already signed on to S.J. Res. 10. The House Republicans should join their Senate colleagues and put forth the strongest amendment possible.

Americans for Prosperity believes it would be a mistake, both politically and from a policy perspective, for the House to hold a perfunctory vote on a weak balanced budget amendment.

Sincerely,

James Valvo
