Louisville, KY — Sixteen fourth-graders and two teachers were treated at an area hospital after a school bus overturned on I-65, while on a field trip. The school bus accident occurred Thursday morning, November 3, 2011, on I-65 in Hart County, reported WDRB.

One student and one adult still remain hospitalized, after the bus driver apparently lost control of the bus while on their way to Mammoth Cave.

All sixteen people on the Louisville Collegiate School bus were treated at a nearby Glasglow hospital for cuts and bruises, as well as broken bones. Six students were later transferred to Kosair, while one teacher was taken to University Hospital for further medical treatment.

As of Thursday night, five of the six injured students had been treated and released.

The driver of the bus initially told Kentucky State Police that a passing semi-truck hit the bus, but preliminary investigations revealed that it didn’t appear a collision took place prior to the rollover. The school bus was heavily damaged in the wreck.

"The driver may have thought he was going to be hit, and may have swerved to keep from getting hit by the truck, at which point he lost control of the bus," said State Trooper Jonathan Biven to WDRB.

Investigations into the school bus accident are underway.
