/EINPresswire.com/ NEW HYDE PARK, NY - Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York, a division of North Shore-LIJ Health System, which provides a range of services including pediatric cardiac surgery, has received the Excellence in Life Support award from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). The award is given to medical centers providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) programs that achieve the highest level of performance, innovation, satisfaction and quality.
ECMO consists of extracorporeal techniques used in intensive care situations where the heart and/or lungs of a patient are so diseased or damaged they can no longer function normally on their own. This temporary bypass system allows staff to treat infants and children with life-threatening respiratory illnesses, cardiac disease and other issues that would require heart-lung bypass during pediatric cardiac surgery.
According to documents provided by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, a designated Center of Excellence has demonstrated extraordinary achievement in the following three categories:
1) Excellence in promoting the mission, activities and vision of ELSO
2) Excellence in patient care by using the highest quality measures, processes and structures based upon evidence
3) Excellence in training, education, collaboration and communication that supports ELSO guidelines and contributes to a healing environment.
Peter Silver, MD, the chief of pediatric critical care at Cohen Children's Medical Center stated: "Our designation as an ELSO Center of Excellence is a testament to CCMC's commitment to exceptional patient and critical care, and the hard work of our staff." He continued: "Using specialized equipment, our staff established patient protocols and received advanced training and education in extracorporeal life support. Their expertise distinguishes our team among the local and international healthcare communities, and provides life-saving options to infants struggling to survive."
The ECMO program at Cohen Children's Medical Center is available in the newborn and pediatric intensive care units. Outside of the those units, Cohen Children's Medical Center also provides care and acts as a regional referral center for neonates and pediatric patients suffering critical illness. The ECMO team features a wide range of specialists including pediatric and neonatal intensive care staff, pediatric surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons and other cardiologists for pediatric heart surgery, specialty RN's, respiratory therapists and perfusionists.
