Kohl's Partners with Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York to Promote Nutrition & Heart Health
/EINPresswire.com/ As part of a continuing partnership, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York has partnered with Kohl's Department Stores in 2011 to educate families on the importance of good nutrition and the impact healthy eating habits can have on overall health.
With a steady decline in health across the U.S. and a rise in childhood obesity, the multifaceted outreach program intends to help promote better health through educational programs, staff development, operational support within the hospital and general community outreach services for professionals as well as the public.
The smart initiative comes at a time when childhood obesity is out of control. According to the CDC, approximately 17% of children and adolescents (more than 12.5 million) between the ages of 2 to 19 years of age are considered obese. Since 1980, the figures on obesity among children and adolescents have almost tripled. A variety of factors are to blame, but unfortunately unhealthy lifestyle habits and eating will continue into adult years as the children grow. If uncorrected, poor lifestyle and nutrition choices can and will have a growing impact on future generations. The results are likely to include malnourishment that could lead to poor fetal development, requiring corrective surgeries, additional NICU and post-natal care as well as pediatric cardiac surgery for correcting cardiovascular defects.
Improving the health of children is the first step in reducing the risk of childhood diabetes as well as pediatric heart surgery for defects that occur as a result of malnutrition in young mothers. Cohen Children's Medical Center will be working with three school districts to promote the Kohl's Cares Keeping Kids Healthy program. Through these three schools, the hospital will introduce yearlong fitness and nutrition programs and will provide additional outreach to parents on how to make healthier food choices.
Arthur Klein, MD, executive director and chief of staff at Cohen Children's Medical Center, and senior vice president of children's services for North Shore-LIJ, stated "For more than 25 years, this hospital has devoted itself to the care and well-being of children. We are very grateful and are delighted to team with Kohl's once again in a combined effort to promote safety and good health to children and families within the community."
