What do Physicians do at CDER?
The duties of a Physician at CDER differ by office. Opportunities may include:
- Providing scientific, clinical, and regulatory oversight for investigational studies conducted during drug development.
- Serving as the clinical expert on a multidisciplinary team in the review and evaluation of clinical scientific data to assess new drugs and biologics, biosimilar biologics, over-the-counter drugs, and generic drugs and make decisions regarding marketing approval.
- Designing, operating, directing, and participating in inspections to verify the quality, data integrity, and protection of human subjects (i.e., rights, safety, and welfare) in clinical trials of safety and efficacy.
- Reviewing proposed drug labels to determine whether they contain truthful claims about the product’s effectiveness, appropriate warnings and precautions about the product’s safety, and adequate directions for the product’s use.
- Conducting ongoing oversight of approved products to ensure their continued safety in the post-approval setting.
- Presenting at conferences and interacting with industry in face-to-face meetings.
- Serving as a consultant across the FDA and assisting with the development of policies and guidances.
- Participating in mentoring and training programs.
