CONSOL Energy Worker Killed in West Virginia Above-Ground Mining Accident

Marshall County, WV — A CONSOL Energy employee was killed Monday night, October 17, 2011 in an above-ground mining accident. The fatal workplace accident occurred at the river portal, near Route 2 in Bendwood, reported WTOV9.com.
According to MSHA officials, Charles “Charlie” McIntire, 62, was using a machine as a trench digger in an area called the “jump,” which is where there is a 50-foot break in a trolley wire and where regular vehicles can cross the mine track.
McIntire reportedly got out of the machine to hook up a nip, when the machine apparently hit him with it re-energized, killing McIntire.
WTOV9 reported that a representative of the United Mine Workers Association in Triangle, Va., issued a statement saying, "The hearts and prayers of all UMWA members are with the family of the victim. We don't know exactly what the circumstances are, but our international representatives are on the ground at the mine participating with federal and state authorities in the investigation."
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are investigating the fatal mining accident.
McIntire was reportedly approaching his 10th anniversary as a CONSOL employee when the fatal accident took place.
