Debate on CAP Reform Package launched at EU Agriculture Council
The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, is travelling to Luxembourg today to participate in the first debate by the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers on the CAP reform proposals which takes place tomorrow.
The Minister said he would use the debate to set out his main priorities in the negotiations. "In particular, I will be looking for the maximum flexibility to design the payment model for the Single Farm Payment that best suits Irish conditions and structures" the Minister said. "I will also be seeking a lengthy transition period from the current payments system."
The Minister said he would use the opportunity of the Council to have informal bilateral discussions with his Ministerial colleagues. "It is time to strengthen the alliances I have been building with other like-minded Member States. This will be of crucial importance in the protracted negotiations that are ahead" the Minister said.
