When Tampa Bay Plumbers received an unsolicited offer to sell the company recently, it wasn't because of their stellar reputation of honest, good service. Oddly enough it had less to do with the daily plumbing work it performs, rather, for its unique marketing program.

When Tampa Bay Plumbers received an unsolicited offer to sell the company recently, it wasn't because of their stellar reputation of honest, good service. Oddly enough it had less to do with the daily plumbing work it performs, rather, for its unique marketing program.
The company recently created an edgy mascot called "Terd Burns" that has been the talk of the town. Terd Burns was created by Tampa Bay Plumbers in December, 2010 with the idea of making people remember the company in case of an emergency. "We hoped the mascot would gain traction, but thought it would take a long time to accomplish considering the modest media budget we had. Plus, we had such a small production budget we worried it would come out looking cheap", said Managing Member Ryan Pelky. "We wanted full animation, but simply couldn't afford it. We've been blown away by the response since we released the commercial August 1 on Verizon Fios", Pelky said.
Terd Burns has been viewed thousands of times YouTube and has resulted in a huge increase in traffic to the Tampa Bay Plumbers website.
The company may not have to worry about budget constraints much longer if they accept a buy-out offer. "I can't imagine what could have been done with this character if we had proper funding. Right now is not the best time for us to sell, but I was pleasantly surprised when the offer came in. I never thought in a million years our funny friend, the Terd, would have generated this type of local buzz."
For now it seems the company is staying close to home, but that may not be the case forever. "The company's shareholders are open to the possibility of selling the company, but not in the immediate future", said Ryan Pelky. "The amount of plumbing companies in Tampa makes it very difficult to set yourself apart. Terd Burns solves that problem for us."
