AJC Applauds Congressional Approval of Free Trade Pacts

October 12, 2011 – New York – AJC applauds the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate for passing tonight crucial free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.

“Congress has affirmed the U.S. commitment to several of our country’s important allies,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris. “These FTAs  will help create jobs, foster mutual economic benefits, and further strengthen the friendly ties between our nations.”

When submitting the FTAs for Congressional approval last week, President Obama stressed that the deals will bolster U.S. exports and help create jobs for workers in America. He urged the House and Senate to ratify the pacts “without delay.”

AJC has been a strong advocate for the three agreements. While the FTAs with Colombia and Panama cannot resolve all the challenges facing Latin American societies, they can help usher in transformation in many spheres. The FTA with South Korea recognizes that nation’s strategic position and advanced economy, which make strengthening ties with this key partner a U.S. priority.

Passage of the pacts comes on the eve of a state visit by South Korea’s president, Lee Myung-bak, whose country has yet to finalize its ratification of the free trade pact. Parliaments of Colombia and Panama ratified the trade agreements their countries signed with the U.S. in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
