Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg Welcomes Honduran Counterpart Eduardo Enrique Reina García
AUSTRIA, September 5 - On 6 September 2022, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg met his counterpart from Honduras, Eduardo Enrique Reina García, for talks in Vienna. Discussions focused on bilateral and economic ties between Austria and Honduras, multilateral issues, and regional developments in Latin America. During their meeting, the two foreign ministers also signed a memorandum of understanding on setting up a mechanism for regular political consultations between their countries.
Foreign Minister Schallenberg underlined the strong friendship between Austria and Honduras and explained that establishing a mechanism for political consultations on bilateral, multilateral and regional issues would reinforce mutual cooperation.
Today’s signing of a bilateral memorandum of understanding between Austria and Honduras will help to strengthen the friendly relations between our two countries even further. Regular political consultations will also allow us to work together with greater intensity on a multilateral level,
said Foreign Minister Schallenberg.
One area in which Austria and Honduras are cooperating closely is disarmament, particularly under the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Foreign Minister Schallenberg thanked his counterpart for the excellent working relationship that the two countries enjoy. The remaining Latin American countries that had not yet signed up to the TPNW must be brought on board quickly, he said, for which support including from Honduras would be vital.
Foreign Minister Schallenberg also welcomed the fact that Honduras joined the vast majority of the international community in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the framework of the United Nations General Assembly. He appealed for efforts to build on this step and contribute to ending the war as soon as possible through coherent and decisive action.
