Delaware County, IA — A construction worker is in critical condition after being buried up to his waist when a trench collapsed Monday morning, September 19, 2011. The construction accident took place at about 8:45 a.m. along 330th Street, southeast of Ryan, reported KCRG.

According to officials, an employee of a Manchester excavating company, Anthony Marbach, 23, of rural Manchester, was buried up to his waist in dirt when a dirt wall suddenly gave way.

Rescue efforts took about two hours to complete, before Marbach was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for treatment. He is reportedly listed in critical, but stable condition.

The Manchester excavating company, Gudenkauf Tiling and Excavation, was digging the trench to connect the field, or drainage tile, from farm field to another, reported KCRG.

Rescue crews from Ryan and Coggon volunteer fire departments, as well as a technical rescue team from the Marion Fire Department responded to the scene.

Investigations into the trench collapse and how it occurred are underway. Investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are also expected to conduct an investigation of its own.
