San Diego, CA — Eleven people were rushed to the hospital after construction scaffolding collapsed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, which shut down all northbound traffic from Mexico, reported the Los Angeles Times.

The 50-by 50-foot section of scaffolding collapsed and trapped 15 vehicles under the canopy, in which eight of the victims were able to escape from their entrapped vehicles.

Responding emergency crews were called in to help extricate the rest.

Out of the 11 people rushed to area hospitals, only one victim is considered to be seriously injured. Four of the injured people were construction workers, including the victim who was seriously injured.

The scaffolding was reportedly part of a major expansion project at the border crossing.

Investigations into the scaffolding collapse and how it occurred are underway. It was not reported if the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would be investigating the construction accident.
