Surrey City Centre Library Showcases Amazing Design

The new Surrey City Centre Library, designed by Vancouver-based Bing Thom Architects, is set to open on September 24, 2011. The LEED-certified building marks the next phase in revitalization of the downtown Surrey area. It's part of the innovative work/play/learn/live environment that was started in vibrant Central City, which is right down the street from the Surrey Library. The library is 82,000 sq. ft., with much of the space used in innovative ways. Featuring study rooms, a teen lounge, a fireplace, a coffee shop, a children's area, SFU Continuing Education classrooms, community meeting rooms, and more, the building will challenge the stereotype of a typical library facility.
Morrison Hershfield, a multidisciplinary engineering firm delivering personalized cost effective and technically sophisticated engineering projects, was the building envelope consultant on the project.
Building envelope design is a specialized area of architectural and engineering practice that draws from all areas of building science, including air, water, thermal and moisture management. It was a crucial aspect in executing on the City Centre Library design and its LEED-certified status.
The library is set to open September 24th with over 100,000 books and 80 computers available to the public.
