TRENTON, N.J., August 25, 2011—James Benton, the Executive Director of the New Jersey Petroleum Council, issued the following statement on Governor Chris Christie's announcement regarding hydraulic fracturing:
"Today's action is a step toward meeting our state's energy supply needs. Responsible development of natural gas already supplies two thirds of New Jersey households with their primary source of affordable and reliable home heating.
"Smart domestic energy policies that allow for domestic energy development are needed so that we can work toward reaching our goals of creating jobs, strengthening the economy and meeting America's need for energy.
"Stringent industry standards and proper regulations can ensure the safety and security of the environment and we are committed to working with the New Jersey Department of Environmental protection during its analysis. A balanced approach to the development of our domestic resources can provide remarkable opportunity for New Jersey and our nation's energy security."
The New Jersey Petroleum Council is a division of API.
