IBERDROLA INSPECTS 60,000 KILOMETRES OF POWER LINES IN SPAIN TO REINFORCE SECURITY OF SUPPLY

  • As part of the work to overhaul electrical installations
  • In the first semester of the year, the company inspected the cables that are most used in supplying peak summertime electricity demands
  • IBERDROLA performed a quick inspection on 15,300 kilometres, an ordinary inspection on around 21,000 and a more thorough inspection on 10,500 kilometres of power lines, as well as analysing a further 9,500 kilometres with infrared technology and pruning trees that could come into contact with over 4,000 kilometres of power lines

In the first six months of 2011, IBERDROLA inspected over 60,000 kilometres of its power lines in Spain, in order to reinforce security of supply this summer and with the ultimate aim of continuing to enhance the quality of the service it provides.

The company inspected the very high, high and medium voltage power lines that register the greatest peaks in demand for electricity due to the high summertime temperatures.

IBERDROLA performed an ordinary inspection on around 21,000 kilometres and a quick inspection on over 15,300 kilometres of power lines. These interventions are aimed at detecting possible anomalies in the elements that make up the installations: insulators, conductors, iron fittings, supports, etc, damaged by lighting, trees, construction work or nearby buildings, among other causes.

The company also carried out a thorough inspection on electrical supports, and took measurements needed to detect possible anomalies along 10,500 kilometres of its power lines.

The company also used infrared technology – thermographic analysis – to inspect a further 9,500 kilometres of power lines. This operation consists of inspecting electrical infrastructure with thermographic cameras that are transported by helicopter or by a team of workers on foot. The temperature of the installations is measured, which allows to detect the spots where temperatures are unsuitably high – hot spots – in order that they may be corrected and that supply may be guaranteed if there is a peak in demand.

Lastly, IBERDROLA carried out cleaning work on the corridors through which the power lines pass, felling and pruning trees that pose a greater risk of coming into contact with the cables along around 4,000 kilometres of power lines.

This campaign to inspect power lines is part of an ongoing initiative to overhaul the company’s electrical installations, with a view to enhancing the quality and security of the electricity supply.
