Minister of State McEntee Reviews Progress at One of Ireland's Leading Distributors of Potatoes, Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Shane McEntee TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has visited the headquarters of Meade Potato Company Ltd., one of the country's top five enterprises in growing, packing and distributing potatoes, fresh fruit and vegetables, to review progress on the company's expansion and development plans.

Meade Potato Company Ltd is engaged in a €4 million investment programme to improve and expand its facilities at Lobinstown in county Meath, where they employ more than 100 people. The company supplies potatoes, fruit and vegetables to major retailers, North and South. The Minister of State viewed progress on the construction of a new warehouse and office block.

Minister McEntee said: "I want to compliment Philip Meade and his team on their courage and foresight in expanding their business further in these challenging times. Good distributors and packers of local Irish produce are vital to maintaining and expanding a viable horticulture sector. Consumers have a clear preference for fresh, locally grown produce. However, I believe the large retail multiples need to do more to support and promote local produce. That is why I have backed proposals for a mandatory code of conduct for the retail sector and an Ombudsman".
