CAMPBELL RIVER - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, today attended the official opening of the Homalco Health Centre in Campbell River, B.C. The Government of Canada contributed over $2.3 million for the design and construction costs of this facility.

"I am happy to be here on behalf of my colleague Minister Aglukkaq to celebrate this opening," said Minister Duncan. "I know that this health centre will be important for the community."

The new health centre will be operated by the Homalco First Nation and will offer programs and services that will have a direct impact on the health of community members, including Community Health Nursing, Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative, Home and Community Care, as well as services to children, youth and adults.

The new 377 square metre facility will house medical and dental services for the community, including nursing treatment and consulting services. The planning of the one-storey, 11-room facility started in 2005 and its construction commenced in 2010. The health centre is unique in that it is heated and cooled by ground heat with no carbon dioxide emissions.

"Our Government is proud to have supported the building of this health facility that will help maintain and improve the health of First Nations people," said Minister Aglukkaq.
