St. Cloud Times: Your turn: Celebrate country's history, freedom

On June 11, 1776, Congress assigned five Founding Fathers the monumental task of helping to draft the document that would sever America’s ties with England. For some time, the idea of freedom from England had been growing in its appeal to the American colonists, but now it was time to put into words the cry for freedom the people felt within their hearts.

Twenty-three grueling days later, on July 4th, 1776, Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, America’s official cry for liberty.

This groundbreaking document stunned and shocked the world. The Declaration unashamedly called for not only an end to British oppression, but for the establishment of a free republic, which included a government that protected every American’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our great nation, the United States of America, was born that day; a nation I am both proud and honored to call home!

For 235 years, “we the people” have celebrated July Fourth as the day when a free America became irrefutable evidence to the world of what a nation can be when freedom takes flight on the wings of God’s grace. Even today, I can still hear the sound of freedom as it echoes from her mountains, across her plains and from shining sea to shining sea! God blessed America at her birth, and he continues to bless her today!

Notably, John Adams, a member of the committee that oversaw the writing of the Declaration, foresaw the importance of this monumental day, writing to his wife Abigail that: “(The day) ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore.”

I agree with Adams. We should celebrate the birth of our nation.

But this Independence Day, while we enjoy the parades and fireworks, let’s be sure to teach our children just how important it is to be an involved citizen of America.

Tell them what happened on July 4th, 1776; teach them what a privilege it is to be an American; and finally, let us lead them by example by doing our part to keep our country strong!

As you’re out there, continuing to be a good neighbor, let us not forget that “freedom is never free” and must never be taken for granted. Though we are united, like the early colonists, we must continue to fight oppression every day.

National issues — such as economic instability and our wmounting debt burden — pose a threat to the freedoms we enjoy today. That is why I am so encouraged by the many phone calls and letters I’ve received, calling for our nation’s leaders to make the tough choices to keep America free from our foreign lenders and to quit spending more than we take in. Please keep those calls coming!

Let’s also be sure to support our selfless troops overseas who are protecting us every day from our enemies.

And if you can, find ways to support the jobless in your community and continue supporting American businesses, especially small businesses.

Take heart, America, and remember we are the fortunate descendants of the same incredibly courageous American colonists who adopted the Declaration of Independence. Let us, as Adams also wrote, “consider the great question of freedom” and thank God for his faithfulness in standing beside the land that we love. God bless you and your family this Independence Day, and God bless America.
