Seven Enforcement Orders Served in May

Wednesday, 8 June 2011

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that four Closure Orders, one Improvement Order and two Prohibition Orders were served on food businesses during the month of May for breaches in food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.  The Enforcement Orders served in May were issued by environmental health officers (EHOs) in the HSE West Region, the HSE South Region and the Dublin North East Region.

Closure Orders were served on:
•  3 in1 Curry, Pizza & Kebab House (Closure of activities: defrosting, cutting and cooking of raw meat), 2-3, New Street, Bantry, Cork
•  L.M Carey bakery, Colligan, Dungarvan, Waterford
•  Macari’s restaurant, 79 Bridge Street, Cootehill, Cavan
•  Cahill’s Foodstore (Closed area: Butchery Department including butchery equipment and walk in coldroom), Main Street, Crookstown, Cork

An Improvement Order was served on:
•  Papa Sorrento Take Away, Barry Avenue, Finglas, Dublin 11

Prohibition Orders were served on:
•  Dynasty Chinese Restaurant &Take Away, Unit 9, College View, Ballymun Town Centre, Ballymun Road, Dublin 9
•  Sligo Spice and Halal Point butcher shop, 14 Connolly Street, Sligo

Commenting on these latest Enforcement Orders, Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, and FSAI said, “It is hugely disappointing that we are reporting today more than double in the number of Enforcement Orders that were necessary to serve in May (7) versus April (3) this year.   Such an increase in statistics is evidence that some food businesses have become complacent and let standards decline which is unacceptable.  The current E. coli outbreak in Germany serves as a harsh reminder of the potential consequences of poor food safety practices.  The FSAI is warning all food business operators to place robust food safety systems and hygiene practices top of their agenda.  Dirty premises, unhygienic practices and improper storage of food simply will not be tolerated.  Food inspectors across the country are as active as ever during the summer months carrying out food inspections, so that consumers can feel confident about the food they are purchasing.”

Details of the food businesses served with these Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website.  Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
