Starbucks Continues Global 40th Anniversary Celebration With New Store Design Unveil at Zurich Central
SEATTLE and ZURICH; May 12, 2011 – Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) along with Howard Schultz, chairman, president and ceo, commemorated Starbucks 10 year anniversary in Switzerland today with a ribbon cutting ceremony to reopen the company’s store at Zurich Central, the first Starbucks location to open in continental Europe.
“I’m very pleased to be part of this celebration here in Switzerland today, which marks both our 10 year anniversary in Switzerland and our 40th anniversary globally,” said Schultz. “It’s also a special moment for all of us to see our new brand identity in our stores and the new in-store design.”
The Starbucks Zurich Central store design highlights the local community’s heritage, with inspiration being drawn from such iconic locations as Zurich Old Town, the main train station, the university and existing local architecture. Additionally, worn wood, tiled floors, metal stools, factory-inspired lighting, large community tables, and club chairs all evoke the turn of the 20th century and are infused with the mercantile and dry goods elements of Starbucks first store located in Seattle’s Pike Place Market.
“Zurich Central is a high traffic location and in redesigning this store, we wanted to create an inviting, comfortable and locally relevant environment,” said Kenna Giuzio, Starbucks store designer.
To help reflect the character of the surrounding neighborhood, all interior architectural elements, including wood cladding and raw steel, tile floors, concrete-rendered wall surfaces and casework fixtures were crafted within the region or manufactured locally and all furniture was sourced regionally. Specialty coffee equipment found throughout the store was sourced from antiques stores and flea markets throughout the region and pays homage to Starbucks rich coffee heritage. Additionally, a coffee collage placed over the coffee bar includes photos of local partners (employees) who have been with Starbucks Switzerland since the store opened ten years ago. Additional artwork found throughout the store was printed on reclaimed wood paneling, including the feature piece that was designed by a local barista.
“We at Starbucks Switzerland are very proud to welcome Howard for this very special occasion. I also would like to take the opportunity to extend a special thank you to all our partners for their daily work and the enthusiasm they commit to providing the best possible Starbucks Experience,” said Frank Wubben, managing director, Starbucks Switzerland and Austria.
Hundreds of partners attended the ribbon cutting celebration and joined Schultz and Wubben, who were accompanied by John Culver, president, Starbucks International and Rich Nelsen, president, Starbucks EMEA.
