Gnostic Scholar Identifies How Gnostic and Hermetic Visions Were Created

New Book - Gnostic Visions

Santa Barbara, CA--April 27, 2011--

In 1945, near the banks of the River Nile, a jar was unearthed which contained one of the greatest manuscript finds of modern history - the Nag Hamada codices. Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered two years later, this library of ancient documents, dated to 350 A.D., contained religious and philosophical texts, many relating to early Christianity, lost and buried ancient documents that the contemporary world had never before seen. Gnostic texts are also filled with visionary experiences, encounters of strange other-worldly beings, journeys to heavenly realms, and encounters with the divine. For many years scholars had no idea how Gnostic experiences were created. Now for the first time Gnostic scholars may have discovered direct evidence demonstrating how these ancient visionary experiences were originally created.

In his new book, Gnostic Visions: Uncovering the Greatest Secret of the Ancient World, Gnostic scholar Luke A. Myers presents never before seen research demonstrating how Gnostic visions were originally created and the connection Gnostic visions have to the use of visionary compounds that are still in use today. The book starts out with a quick study of prehistoric cave art and its newly discovered connection to altered states of consciousness. The author then goes on to explain some of the visionary religious rites of the classical age. After introducing Gnosticism the author goes on to explore Gnostic rituals and visionary experiences detailing his research on how their visions were created as well as their connection to the use of particular plants in the Middle East.

In his book Luke Myers connects the use of two particular plants known to grow in the Middle East that when mixed and consumed create the same type of visionary experiences found in both near death experiences and Gnostic and Hermetic visionary literature. The book is the first of its kind and represents a major step forward in the study of classical ethnobotany, Gnosticism, and early Christian history.
