Private Detectives can help Prevent Online Dating Scams through Background Checks
The internet is one of the worlds leading arenas for criminal activity such as online dating scams, this type of fraud often leads to vulnerable people exposed to dangerous, greedy conmen and women with one thing on their minds, to steal your money and savings.
Last year the BBC reported that approximately 1 in 4 people use a fake name on the internet, not all of these people are trying to hide a dark secret and may simply be looking to protect their privacy, however there are thousands of fraudsters out there posing as somebody else in the hope of targeting lonely and often vulnerable peoples money. However not all the targeted victims are what you would call vulnerable and are often in high standing executive employment.
Due to the global reach of the internet, participators in online dating are now looking for potential partners and dates internationally which increases the risk of what is known as the online dating scam.
Private detective agency Insight Investigations have reported that each year the number of people contacting them looking for background checks on potential foreign dates, have uncovered that a huge percentage are not who they claim to be and often reside in countries such as Nigeria and Eastern Europe.
Insight report that more often that not, the majority of background checks through online dating reveal that the person claiming to be a wealthy US businessman or based in the UK are completely the opposite, a career criminal or small time fraudster.
Overseas criminals know that there are plenty of men and women who are lonely and desperate for love in their life so will often target perhaps widowed, divorced or long term single dating profiles and then build up a rapport and trust through finding out as much personal information as possible.
As the bond grows between the pair the criminal will say they want to visit the person looking for a partner and ask to be sent money to travel to meet them, or give them a sob story that they needs thousands of pounds to clear debts or serious trouble at home. The person caught in the scam has built up so much trust that they send the money time and time again until they have no money left. At this point the potential date will disappear, leaving the victim with no date and shockingly penniless.
Hiring a private detective agency such as Insight, who have 30 years of experience in the industry, to carry out background checks on anyone you are considering dating or sending money to can help prevent you from become the victim of an online dating scam.
Insight will use their knowledge, resources and experience to trace the person you are talking to and prove if they are who they claim to be, or of course not. Finance, lifestyle and other important factors can be researched so you can build up the full picture of the person.
Tony Smith, Director of Insight Investigations said "In order for us to commence the background checks, the client will supply us with as much information as possible on the potential future spouse. The nature of the scammers, who are often very clever people is one of ever changing methods, we regularly attend training courses to keep up date and research these methods. We have been able to prevent people from falling victim to online dating scams and also in some cases assisted in recovering the money that people have lost."
Remember, not all long distance romances are destined to result in an online dating scam, however it is also worth noting that a When Harry Met Sally scenario is Hollywood fiction and that it is worth being prepared and taking caution.
