An Earthquake Update for Our Customers, Fans and Friends
Everyone at Honda would like to express our sincere sympathy, condolences and wishes for an early recovery to the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in northwestern part of Japan on March 11, 2011. Honda associates in the U.S. and from around the world have joined together as one to support the recovery. To those of you who have joined us in supporting the people of Japan at this difficult time thank you!
We also would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your expressions of support and concern for Honda, as we make every effort to resume full production as soon as possible. Several of our operations in Japan sustained serious damage and, quite tragically, one research & development associate lost his life.
While none of our auto plants in Japan sustained significant damage, a number of our suppliers were impacted, which has slowed the supply of some key parts and components. Now, after several weeks of hard work and perseverance, our associates in Japan are on the verge of resuming auto production on April 11.
In North America, more than 80% of Honda and Acura products sold in the U.S. are produced in North America. And, the vast majority of the parts and materials we use to build products in America come from 600 suppliers based in North America. However, for global efficiency, a few critical parts continue to be supplied from Japan.
Thus, the unstable parts supply situation in Japan is impacting our ability to operate our automobile plants here in North America at full strength. We have announced that temporary levels of reduced production will continue through the week of April 18-22 and we anticipate that additional production adjustments will be required after that date. In short, this remains a very fluid situation.
We are working closely with our dealers to make every effort to meet the needs of our customers both for new and certified used Honda and Acura products, as well as the service parts to keep you on the road.
Importantly, we remain focused on minimizing the impact of any reduction in production on our associates in Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Canada and Mexico who build Honda all terrain vehicles, power equipment and Honda and Acura automobiles for our customers.
We will continue to communicate appropriate information as it is confirmed and becomes available. And we sincerely appreciate your continued patience and understanding. Thank you.
