Seven Enforcement Orders Served in March

Thursday, 7 April 2011

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that five Closure Orders and two Prohibition Orders were served on food businesses during the month of March for breaches in food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.  The Enforcement Orders were issued by environmental health officers (EHOs) in the HSE West Region; the HSE Dublin Mid Leinster Region; the HSE Dublin North East Region; and the HSE South Region.

Closure Orders were served on:

• Woks Cooking takeaway, Garraun, Parteen, Clare
• CMS Catering Ltd at Clonskeagh House (not including bar area), 68 Clonskeagh Road, Dublin 6
• Polonez supermarket (Meat and Deli Counter only), Unit 5, Block 4B, Mountview Shopping Centre, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15
• Charlie Stewarts/Seasons 52 (excluding bar area), 76 Parnell Street, Ennis, Clare
• The Green Chilli restaurant, 46 Manor Street, Dublin 7

Prohibition Orders were served on:

• Polonez supermarket, Unit 5, Block 4B, Mountview Shopping Centre, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15
• Spice House grocery, 16 Bridge Street, Cork

A successful prosecution was also carried out by the HSE West Region on The Quay Cottage Restaurant, The Quay, Westport, Mayo.

Commenting on these latest Enforcement Orders, Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI, stated that vigilance is always required in relation to food safety and standards must not be permitted to slip to such levels that consumer health is put at risk.

“The seven Enforcement Orders served in March is an unacceptable statistic to be reporting.  Food business operators must recognise that the legal onus is on them to be responsible and ensure that the food they serve is safe to eat.  The FSAI has stressed again and again, that a basic food safety management system is not difficult to implement, so it is disappointing that there continues to be food business operators who choose not to comply with this legal requirement.”

“If food businesses are unsure of what is required of them by law, we offer expert advice through our advice line (1890 336677) that food businesses can contact with any queries they may have in relation to food safety.  We also provide a comprehensive source of information on every aspect of food safety, food hygiene management and food legislation on our website: www.fsai.ie.  There’s no excuse for ignorance of the legal food safety requirements,” he added.

Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
