Law Professor Writes Children's Book about Allergies, Plans Website

Law Professor Prentice White writes children's book about food allergies to build daughter's self-esteem and help others.

Baton Rouge, LA—March 24, 2011—

Professor Prentice White never imagined that one day he'd be the published author of a children's book, but that's exactly what happened. Soon after her birth, White and his wife discovered that their infant daughter had multiple food allergies. As they struggled to deal with raising an allergic child, the Whites made a discovery: there were several books available to parents about childhood food allergies, but few from a child's perspective. Prentice White set out to change that. After months of hard work, "It's Not Bad to Be Allergic!" was the result.

"It's Not Bad to Be Allergic!" tells the story of a young girl, closely modeled on the Whites' daughter Kaydence, struggling to accept and learn about her food allergies. The child's mother comforts her and offers guidance, including the reassurance that God is on her side and is planning something really big for her future. The religious element of the story adds yet another unique quality to the work.

And now, to bring Kaydence's story to an even wider audience, Professor White will be launching a new website in her honor, PrenticeWhite.com, on April 15, 2011. The site will provide information for parents and children alike on the problems associated with childhood allergies. His book "It's Not Bad to Be Allergic!" will be available for readers to purchase directly from the publisher's website.

"It seems like everyone knows someone who's dealing with food allergies," Prentice White said. His book and website will help children and parents to talk, encourage, and possibly to inspire each other about what can be a devastating diagnosis for the entire family.

It all started when Prentice's wife, Tarsha, began to put Kaydence on formula before returning to work after maternity leave. The formula caused Kaydence to vomit and curl up in pain. Soy formula was even worse. After many trips to the doctor, the Whites finally found something that worked: amino acid-based formula and squash.

Eventually, the Whites learned what foods Kaydence had to avoid, but there were no books to help their daughter deal with this issue on a social level or to answer any of her questions. White knew he had to do something to give his daughter hope and to build her confidence. White's new book, a labor of love for his daughter, proved to be the answer.

At the end of the story, the little girl asks her mom a bedtime question: "Is God allergic?"

"I was in tears," Tarsha says. "I couldn't believe he had done something so sweet and something she needed so much."

What's next for Prentice White? He'll be writing and publishing a Christmas book about childhood eczema later this year.
