BATH, Mich. – Michigan food processors, growers, and economic development leaders are invited to attend the Michigan Food Processors Summit on April 27, 2011. The summit will be held at Eagle Eye Golf Club, 15500 Chandler Road in Bath. The event will bring together industry and regulatory experts, economic development leaders and Michigan processors to discuss environmental concerns, food safety, economic opportunities, and market access to help grow the food processing industry and create jobs in Michigan.

“Michigan food processors will continue to play a substantial role in our state’s reinvention by diversifying our economic base while creating long-term jobs,” said Keith Creagh, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director. “With continued investment and policy support, there is tremendous opportunity to expand the food processing industry in Michigan.”

Michigan’s food processing industry generates nearly $25 billion in overall economic activity and employs nearly 134,000 Michigan workers at nearly 1,600 licensed food processors. The state has an extremely diversified portfolio for food processing and produces over 200 commodities on a commercial basis, making Michigan second in the nation in agricultural diversity.

“Michigan’s food processors play a vital role in our state’s economy,” said Michael Finney, President and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). “Our expanded efforts to grow our agricultural and food processing base can only add to our economic vitality.”
