Finalists announced for 2011 UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards

Step Change in Safety and Oil & Gas UK have announced the finalists for the 2011 UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards, sponsored by Maersk Oil.

Now in their second year, the awards celebrate the important contributions to safety by people and companies.

Finalists for the award categories are:

Safety Leadership – which recognises a highly-motivated individual who works tirelessly to ensure their team operates safely and professionally at all times:

• Colin Bruce, technical director – engineering, Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd
• Ivan Gibbon, rig manager, KCA Deutag
• Graham Spencer, occupational health co-ordinator, Marathon Oil U.K. Ltd


Safety Representative of the Year – which recognises an individual's active participation and effectiveness promoting and committing to the industry’s safety agenda:

• Stuart Mackay, production operator/safety rep, Chevron North Sea Limited
• John Murray, rigger, BIS Salamis
• William Watt, operations technician, Petrofac


Preventative Safety Action – which recognises an individual who, through their pro-active and vigilant behaviour, successfully intervened to prevent a potential incident:

• Colin Grant, maintenance supervisor, Archer
• Iain Park, head of operational safety, Total E&P UK Limited
• Mike Ross, hydraulic technician, Aker Solutions


Most Promising Individual – which recognises the enthusiasm of an individual who has demonstrated a keen interest in safety matters and actively embraced the safety culture in the oil and gas industry:

• John Evans, project engineer, CAN (Offshore) Limited
• David Mackenzie, production apprentice, Clyde Platform, Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd
• Roger Smith, onshore HSEQ advisor, Petrofac


Innovation in Safety (Company Award) – which recognises a company's innovative approach to safety by implementing a new process or technique:

• BP
• NATS
• Talisman Energy (UK) Limited


A sixth award, for Services to Safety, will be chosen and presented by the co-chairs of Step Change in Safety, John Forrest and Gordon Ballard.

Winners will be announced at the awards lunch, to be held at the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen, on 20 April 2011. Guest speaker on the day will be Bob Jones, head of flight operations at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, who will also present the winners with their awards.
