Q-Cells cooperation: Ferropolis developing from a monument for lignite mining to a centre of photovoltaics

Today, a funding notification from the Economics Minister of Sachsen-Anhalt, Dr. Reiner Haseloff, was handed over to the event venue Ferropolis - The town of iron - a cooperation with Q-Cells SE having been decided on parallel to this.

Ferropolis, 18 February 2011 – Solar plants will be installed on the roofs of the Ferropolis premises in the next few weeks, in order to obtain electricity from regenerative energies in future and hence promote the sustainability of the event venue. The plant with a total capacity of 235 Kilowatt Peak (KWp) is to be installed by the international solar company QCells, with head office in Sachsen-Anhalt.

“We’re delighted to be a partner for this pioneering solar project that is important for the region,” states Thomas Franken, Head of Marketing at Q-Cells. “With projects of this type we shall jointly succeed in spurring on the transformation to regenerative energies at a fast pace.”

Economics Minister of Sachsen-Anhalt, Dr. Reiner Haseloff has also enabled a major step towards the future. He has handed over a funding notification in Ferropolis for further development of the infrastructure on the Ferropolis peninsula. The investment project, comprising a sum of more than EUR 5 million, is to be invested in the transportation and safety infrastructure. The subsidy from the state, federal government and European Union is just under EUR 4 million. The town of Gräfenhainichen applied for this funding for infrastructure development from funds of the Joint Agreement for the Improvement of Regional Economic Structures. The money will be used to invest in the safety infrastructure on the premises, for example a further rescue route, so as to be able to hold safe events for up to 25,000 visitors in future as well.

“Ferropolis is a unique monument and an advertisement not only for the region, but also for the state of Sachsen-Anhalt as a whole. With the financial support of the investment project, the state government wants to play its role in preserving the industrial roots of our state for tourism and enhancing the attractiveness of the event venue,” announced Economics Minister Dr. Reiner Haseloff, today in Gräfenhainichen.
