PotashCorp Contributes $150,000 to the U of S Huskies
PotashCorp’s latest contribution to the University of Saskatchewan’s Huskies came this weekend with a $150,000 donation that will be spread across the program’s 15 teams and used for travel, equipment and other expenses. The funds will also be used to support the Huskies Sport Health Centre. The donation was made official with a series of cheque presentations made at this weekend’s wrestling, hockey and basketball games. Basil Hughton, Athletics Director, and Dr. Adam Baxter-Jones, Acting Dean of the College of Kinesiology, were on hand to thank PotashCorp for its ongoing support.
“Huskie Athletics is very grateful for this contribution from PotashCorp,” said Hughton. “Each season the costs associated with running elite CIS teams, like those we have at the University of Saskatchewan, continues to rise. This donation from PotashCorp will help our programs recruit and retain the best and brightest student-athletes and support them in both their athletic and academic pursuits.”
Bill Doyle, President and CEO of PotashCorp lauded the Huskie Athletics program and the important role it plays in student development.
“We value our longstanding relationship with the U of S and the Huskie Athletics program,” explained Doyle. “Athletic programs provide experiences outside the classroom where young people learn about leadership, discipline, hard work and teamwork – the same values that guide us at PotashCorp and drive our success every day.”
PotashCorp has previously contributed more than $10 million to the University of Saskatchewan. In 1998, the company donated $5 million to create the PotashCorp Centre at the Edwards School of Business. Another $5 million was donated in 2005 to upgrade Griffiths Stadium and redevelop PotashCorp Park – the nationally televised site of the 2006 CIS Vanier Cup Championship.
