Congresswoman Michele Bachmann Honored with ‘Heroes of Hydrocephalus’ Award

Following the year-end announcement by the Pediatric Hydrocephalus Foundation, Inc., of the 23 pediatric neurosurgeons from around the Country honored as ‘Heroes of Hydrocephalus’ by the parents of children with Hydrocephalus, (and by some children themselves), the PHF has recognized two more recipients from outside the medical community.

On Monday, January 24th, PHF founders Michael & Kim Illions, along with their 5 year old son Cole who suffers from this incurable brain condition, traveled to Washington, D.C. to present Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and New Jersey Congressman Leonard Lance with plaques naming them as ‘Heroes of Hydrocephalus’.

“What Congresswoman Bachmann and Congressman Lance have done for the Hydrocephalus Community cannot be overstated. In just under 2 years, we saw September named as ‘National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month’, and just this past month, a Congressional Caucus to educate and raise awareness about Hydrocephalus was created”.

“Before that time, for the most part, Hydrocephalus was unknown in Washington. Congresswoman Bachmann and Congressman Lance changed that culture and they are both committed to continuing to help the Hydrocephalus Community,” said Michael Illions, PHF’s National Director of Advocacy.

In 2009, Congresswoman Bachmann was the Primary Sponsor of H. Res. 373; designating the month of September as ‘National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month’.

“It is truly humbling to receive the ‘Heroes of Hydrocephalus’ Award, but I believe the real heroes are those with hydrocephalus, their families, and all advocates who work tirelessly everyday to bring awareness to this condition. I’m glad I could play a small role in the cause by sponsoring a House Resolution designating September as ‘National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month’”, said Congresswoman Bachmann.

Hydrocephalus affects 1 in every 500 newborns and is the number one cause for pediatric brain surgery. Currently ONE MILLION Americans have been diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, which if left untreated, can be fatal.
