WASHINGTON, January 21, 2011 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Office of Food Safety and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will sponsor a public meeting in advance of the 43rd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission's Committee on Food Additives (CCFA). The public meeting will be held to provide information and solicit public comments on the draft U.S. positions for items being discussed at the Codex session.

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Harvey Wiley Federal Building Auditorium, FDA, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, Md. Interested parties may submit comments and register electronically for the meeting using the following e-mail address: cfsan-ccfa@fda.hhs.gov. Early registration is encouraged because it will expedite entry into the building and its parking area. Attendees requiring a parking spot should include the vehicle make and tag in the registration e-mail. Photo identification is required to enter the building. Anyone wishing to attend the meeting by phone should request the call-in number and conference code in the registration e-mail.

The 43rd Session of the CCFA will be held in Xiamen, China from March 14-18, 2011. The CCFA is mandated by Codex to establish or endorse permitted maximum levels of food additives, as well as to consider and make recommendations on related matters such as food additive labeling and methods of analysis to determine additives in food. A complete agenda and documents relating to the 43rd session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives will be available online at www.codexalimentarius.net/web/current.jsp.

Codex was established in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Through adoption of food standards, codes of practice, and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers and ensure that fair practices are used in international food trade. Codex Committee public meetings are intended to ensure a consistent approach to U.S. and international food safety systems on policies and procedures through input from subject matter experts.
