AJC Concludes Meetings with Moroccan Officials, Jewish Community

December 21, 2010 – Casablanca – AJC leaders expressed support for strengthened ties between Morocco and the United States, and discussed regional political issues, in the global advocacy organization’s latest round of consultations in Morocco. The visit took place on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the implementation of the U.S.-Morocco Free Trade Agreement.

AJC President Robert Elman and Government and International Affairs Director Jason Isaacson led a delegation that met during the five-day visit with a number of senior officials, including Minister of State Mohand Laenser, Minister of the Economy and Finance Salaheddine Mezouar, key members of Parliament, Royal Counselor André Azoulay, foreign ministry and security aides, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Sam Kaplan and other diplomats, journalists and top business leaders.

The AJC group also visited Jewish sites in five Moroccan cities. AJC has been visiting Morocco and exchanging views with the country’s leadership for decades.

“Morocco holds a unique place in the heart and history of the Jewish people – as the native land of hundreds of thousands of Jews in Israel, Europe and the United States, and as a modern exemplar of interfaith respect and cooperation,” said Elman.

“Morocco is an important Arab ally of the United States. We applaud Morocco’s vital partnership with our country in efforts to combat extremism, recognize its potential for intensified economic interaction with America under the framework of the FTA, and are confident it will continue to be a force for pragmatism in regional affairs. It has a natural and necessary role to play in advancing Arab-Israeli peace and understanding.”

Elman paid tribute to Moroccan Ambassador at Large Serge Berdugo, leader of the country’s Jewish community and a former Minister of Tourism. The community’s principal civic vehicle, the Communauté Juive Marocaine, over which Berdugo presides, is an AJC international partner.
