The IBERDROLA group, through IBERDROLA USA subsidiary Central Maine Power (CMP)(1), has awarded principal construction contracts worth $524 million for one of the key electricity transmission projects in the United States in the coming years, upgrading the connection between  New England and Canada.

Contracts for the $1.4 billion Maine Power Reliability Program Program (MPRP)(2)  have been awarded to MYR Group, Inc., Irby Construction Co., and Hawkeye, LLC., and will lead to the creation of up to 1,000 jobs. Illinois-based MYR will perform work in the eastern segment of the project, Massachusetts-based Irby Construction the central and western segments, and New-York based Hawkeye the southern section.

“We’re building a stronger, smarter grid for Maine,” said Sara Burns, President of Central Maine Power Company. “Nearly 1,000 people have worked on this project to date, and we expect as many as 1,000 jobs will be added in this next phase of construction.

“The Maine Power Reliability Program is creating jobs when Maine really needs them, and it will ensure Maine has an efficient, reliable grid that will benefit consumers and the environment long into the future.”

Ground-breaking on the project took place on 29th September with completion scheduled by mid-2015, benefitting electricity interconnections between Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as between the last-mentioned state and Canada.

The project involves building and upgrading around 800 kilometers of electricity transmission lines of 225kV and 345 kV, linking 75 towns and villages, with five new 345 kV substations in the northeastern region of the country (see map).

The new infrastructure, which in May received approval from the Maine Public Utility Commission, will benefit 7 million consumers in New England, reinforcing reliability and efficiency of supply. It will also support access for new renewable capacity in Maine, an energy importing state.

The MPRP will not only support up to 3,100 new jobs during the construction phase, but also contribute significantly to benefitting the Maine economy. The project is the largest infrastructure development in the history of this state and the first time in 40 years that CMP’s electricity network will have been updated.
