WASHINGTON, December 16, 2010 — The American Petroleum Institute issued the following statement regarding the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s Pipelines and Informed Planning Alliance Final Report of Recommended Practices:

“API is pleased to have participated in the PIPA initiative and the development of this document and a companion risk report. API encourages communities through which pipelines operate to follow the recommended planning practices to protect themselves from pipeline accidents, and to protect pipelines from encroachment. The accompanying risk report shows that pipelines are the safest way to move fuels to consumers, but that they need to be respected and protected.

“API and liquid pipeline operators are ready to work with municipal planners and property owners on implementation of these recommendations, changes in land-use policies, and development along pipeline rights-of-way. Pipeline operators go to great lengths to protect the public and environment through public awareness programs, integrity management and maintenance practices.”

API represents more than 450 oil and natural gas companies, leaders of a technology-driven industry that supplies most of America’s energy, supports more than 9.2 million U.S. jobs, accounts for 7.5 percent of the U.S. economy, and, since 2000, has invested nearly $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives, while reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.
