AJC Hosts Annual Strategic Forum for Latin American Jews

December 6, 2010 – Miami – Leaders of Jewish communities in Latin American countries spent the weekend in Miami at AJC’s Fourth Annual Strategic Forum for Latin American Jews.

“This gathering is emblematic of our strong cooperative partnership with Latin American Jewry,” said Dina Siegel Vann, director of AJC’s Latino and Latin American Institute. “Together we can work with governments and leaders of civil society to assure a stable, secure and prosperous region as well as productive relations with the U.S. and Israel."

Launched four years ago by AJC, the annual gathering offers a unique setting for the leaders of Jewish communities in Latin America, as well as in Spain, most of them AJC international partners, to discuss current and pending regional and global challenges. This year’s forum focused on the global campaign to delegitimize the state of Israel and how to use a variety of advocacy tools, including social media, to counter the assault.

In addition to the 50 Jewish leaders who flew in from Latin American countries,  South Florida’s growing Latin American Jewish community was well represented at the forum, with 150 attending a keynote address by AJC Executive Director David Harris. A number are active members of AJC’s Miami and Greater Broward County Regional Office.

“We are inspired by AJC’s global advocacy,” said Martin Fleck, Vice President of the Jewish Federation of Sao Paulo, who has participated in several of the AJC-sponsored meetings for Latin American Jewish leadership. “AJC plays a vital role connecting Jewish communities in Latin America and Spain, and the forum provides the opportunities to share experiences and strategies to achieve our common goals.”

Many of the participants from Latin America also regularly attend AJC’s annual meetings in Washington, DC, where they have opportunities to continue to explore the issues discussed at the Miami forums. They are expected to gather again in April at AJC’s Global Forum, the new name for the annual meeting.
