CONFERENCE: Women's Health in Asia
3-5 DECEMBER 2010 | BEIJING
Organizer: The Lancet
Event dates: 3-5 December
Venue: Beijing, China
China has the largest population and the greatest number of women in the world, which, along with China's ongoing economic and cultural metamorphosis, creates enormous challenges in the provision of health-care services for women. According to the WHO global survey on maternal and perinatal health 2007–08 in Asia, China had the highest number of deliveries, the highest overall rates of caesarean section, and the highest rate of caesarean section without indication. Women’s health has become an issue of increasing prominence in China. Asystematic analysis of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5 showed accelerated decreases in maternal mortality in China. Furthermore, in July, 2009, free cervical cancer screening examinations were made available for women aged between 35 years and 59 years under a government-sponsored programme proposed by the All-China Women's Federation. The programme was the first step towards provision of universal breast and cervical cancer screening nationwide. This progress needs to be followed by development of more health-care policies to improve access to health-care services for women throughout Asia.
This conference will provide an opportunity for regional and international leaders to come together from a multitude of disciplines to address the growing public-health and daily practice issues associated with women’s health in Asia.
