NDA Warns of Imposter Food Inspector

LINCOLN - The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) is warning Nebraska food establishments of an imposter food inspector who has begun calling establishments claiming to need an employee's cell phone number to investigate a complaint.

Establishments in Omaha, Bellevue, Hastings, Kearney and Tobias have contacted NDA in the past 24 hours to question the validity of the individual.

"The imposter contacts food establishments via phone, telling them that he has received a complaint and needs an employee's cell phone number to schedule an inspection the next day," said NDA Food Division Administrator George Hanssen. "The imposter then calls back sometime later to set up a time to conduct the investigation. At this point in time, we are unaware that the imposter has actually shown up to any of the establishments."

Hanssen stated that NDA inspectors would never ask for personal information to conduct an investigation, and encourages any food establishment that has a concern about the validity of an inspector to contact his office at (402) 471-2536.

Similar calls are also being reported in Iowa and Washington.
