EINNEWS, November 22—Just days before leaders of most of the world's nations are scheduled to meet in Cancun, Mexico to try to reach a common global warming strategy, Australia has announced a far reaching plan to cut its greenhouse gas emissions—--a plan focusing on agriculture.

Known as the Carbon Farming Initiative, the plan creates a system of land use credits for farmers, foresters and other land users. The government estimates that agriculture accounts for 23 percent of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.

Under the plan, the government will accept applications until July 21, 2011. The plan itself would go into effect July 1, 2011. Twice before the Australian government has attempted to launch carbon offset plans only to be stopped by legislative action.

Because of Australia's heavy reliance on coal for fuel, the nation is one of the world's top emitters of greenhouse gases.
