Transition Team Surveys Members, House Staff for Ways to Improve Operations, Save Taxpayer Money
Washington
(Nov 16)
Majority Transition Committee Chairman Greg Walden today delivered a web-based survey to all members of Congress, their chiefs of staff, and office managers – of both parties – soliciting suggestions for how the House of Representatives can be run with greater efficiency and at a lower cost to taxpayers. In a letter to members and staff opening the survey, Chairman Walden recalls the years before the 1994 transition to power when each day buckets of ice were delivered to every office in the House. The daily delivery of close to one thousand buckets of ice predated modern refrigeration and had since grown unnecessary and wasteful, but had continued for decades. When the transition team of 1994 ended the long-outdated practice, it saved taxpayers $500,000 a year. Concluding his letter, Mr. Walden writes,
As Members and staffers, you doubtless encounter "ice buckets" in your daily work: inefficiencies, flawed processes, and rules or practices that waste taxpayer dollars while doing little to improve the House's work on behalf of the American people. During this transition, we're asking for your help in identifying aspects of House operations that are most in need of reform. So please take a few minutes to complete this survey and help us answer the questions, how can House operations be improved to better serve you as Members and staff - and where are the ice buckets of 2010?NOTE: A PDF of the web-based survey, only accessible on House servers, can be found here.
